As the 177th President of the Law Society of England and Wales, Dr I. Stephanie Boyce became the first person of colour and the first Black president in the Society's 200 year history. She delivered her inaugural address from an empty Chancery Lane during the pandemic, and went on to lead the profession through the biggest overhaul of solicitor qualification in decades and open government criticism of the legal profession. Raised on a council estate by a single mother, Dr. Boyce was doubted early and often. She kept going regardless, and has spent her career challenging assumptions about who succeeds in law. This conversation explores the setbacks and successes that have shaped her remarkable career, and why she remains committed to leaving the profession more diverse than the one she found.
