Elizabeth Ajala

Risk and Control, Director, Ex-Monzo Bank

Elizabeth Ajala is a transformative leader in fintech, widely recognised for her impact on customer outcomes, operational excellence, and her exceptional contribution to equity, inclusion, and representation across the tech sector. Over the past six years at Monzo, she has become one of the organisation’s most influential voices - shaping how the bank delivers fair, consistent, high-quality experiences for customers, while driving cultural change that empowers underrepresented communities.

Elizabeth joined Monzo during a period of rapid growth, becoming the organisation’s first Service Manager. She scaled teams at pace and introduced regulatory aligned service frameworks that supported expansion while prioritising strong customer outcomes. As Head of QA, she built Monzo’s first centralised Quality Assurance function and launched an outsourced QA operation in South Africa. She also rolled out a risk-based QA approach that sharpened focus on the moments that matter most to customers, delivering significant process efficiencies and elevating performance standards. Known for her people first leadership, Elizabeth fosters high engagement, clarity, and empowerment within the teams she leads.

Beyond her operational achievements, Elizabeth is a powerful advocate for equity and a true Diversity Champion. She co-founded Black Monzo in 2020, nurturing a community that has more than tripled in representation and continues to create space for Black colleagues to connect, thrive, and be heard. She courageously uses storytelling - including sharing deeply personal experiences of racism and its generational impact - to shift mindsets and promote understanding.

In 2021, she created the Mutual Mentorship Programme - formally established in 2022 - which became a key pillar of Monzo’s Race Strategy and overall D&I agenda. Elizabeth has personally paired senior leaders with Black colleagues, improving leadership confidence discussing race, deepening allyship, and increasing long-term retention and confidence among Black participants. With 97% of participants recommending the programme, it has now evolved into Monzo’s core mentorship offering.

Elizabeth also led the D&I group for Monzo’s 1,500 person Operations function, facilitating powerful “coffee session” conversations on topics such as neurodiversity, LGBTQ+ identity, women’s wellbeing, and leadership. Her work consistently opens doors, builds empathy, and creates lasting cultural change.

As the first Black woman to hold a senior role at Monzo, Elizabeth is deeply committed to uplifting others, championing equity, and paving the way for future generations of Black professionals in tech. Her leadership, courage, and impact make her an outstanding nominee for the Black Tech Achievement Awards.
