Ope Fajemirokun
Ope is a Software Engineering Team Lead at Bloomberg, responsible for two platforms: the Bloomberg Auction System, supporting government bond and FX auctions across more than 40 countries, and BMatch, an FX order book used by central banks and interbank markets. Prior to Ope’s career at Bloomberg, she earned first-class undergraduate and master’s degrees from University College London. At UCL, she interned at Google Zurich and Citi London, which shaped her focus on building technology at the intersection of financial markets and large-scale systems. She is driven by the knowledge that the systems she builds have real-world market impact.
At Bloomberg, Ope progressed from graduate engineer to Senior Software Engineer and now Team Lead, where she sets the technical direction, develops people, and delivers reliable systems while writing production code. Her platforms support critical market operations, where failures have real-world impact. Ope works collaboratively with product managers, clients, and engineering and QA teams globally to ensure the systems meet client needs.
Ope has widened access to the technology sector. She was one of the pioneers of a Bloomberg initiative to expand engineering hiring from West Africa. She has delivered coding interview workshops at Ashesi University and the University of Ghana, and run virtual sessions with students in Nigeria. Through these programmes, over 100 students have been supported, with multiple participants securing engineering roles at Bloomberg.
Alongside her core role, Ope contributes to Bloomberg’s hiring process. She has helped design an interview format for senior engineering hires centred on code review and debugging, ensuring better assessment of the practical skills required. Ope has also delivered code review workshops and developed initiatives to improve testing, reliability, and engineering quality.
Testing and reliability are central to Ope’s engineering philosophy. She believes disciplined testing and thoughtful design are essential to building robust, high-performance systems. She shared this perspective as the only solo speaker on the tech stage at Black Tech Fest 2024, where she spoke on the role of testing in software engineering. A year later, returning to the festival as a panelist alongside other industry leaders, she discussed culture, collaboration, and the future of innovation.
Ope serves as Co-Lead of Bloomberg’s Black in Tech community, focused on new talent, employee support, and representation. In an engineering field where Black women remain underrepresented in leadership, Ope leverages her rare senior position to spearhead new pathways to opportunity and progression.
Details of work outside of my role
Widening access to software engineering and global hiring pathways
Alongside my core role at Bloomberg, I’m actively involved in work focused on widening access to software engineering and building more equitable hiring pathways into the technology sector.
I was one of the pioneers of a Bloomberg initiative to build a direct engineering hiring pipeline from West Africa. I first travelled to Ghana in 2022 and have continued this work for three consecutive years. During these visits, I delivered coding interview workshops at universities including Ashesi University and the University of Ghana, focused on demystifying technical interviews, building confidence, and helping students understand what strong engineering practice looks like in real-world roles. In addition, I’ve taken part in virtual sessions with students in Nigeria, where I spoke about software engineering roles, recruitment processes, and pathways into global technology companies.
Through these programmes, more than 100 students have been supported, with multiple participants going on to secure engineering roles at Bloomberg, creating tangible and lasting entry points into the global tech industry.
Shaping hiring practices and engineering standards
I contribute to how engineers are hired and developed beyond my immediate team. I am an active interviewer and helped design a new interview format for senior engineering hires, centred on code review and debugging. This format was designed to better assess real-world engineering judgement and the practical skills required in day-to-day production environments.
Alongside this, I’ve delivered code review workshops across multiple Bloomberg offices, including London, New York, and Princeton, to both software engineering and QA engineering teams. This work extends beyond my own team and focuses on raising engineering standards, improving code quality, and strengthening approaches to reliability and testing across the organisation.
Public speaking, knowledge sharing, and external representation
Public speaking and knowledge sharing are an important part of how I contribute beyond my core role. I’ve spoken at Black Tech Fest twice. In 2024, I was the only solo speaker on the tech stage, where I delivered a technical talk on the role of testing in software engineering. In 2025, I returned as a panellist alongside other industry leaders to discuss culture, collaboration, and the future of innovation.
Internally, I’ve moderated panels and delivered talks for audiences ranging from engineering team leads, to my wider department, to cross-team engineering groups. These sessions have focused on leadership, engineering quality, and shared learning across disciplines.
Externally, I also represent Bloomberg at conferences and events where I speak with students and professionals interested in the company and the work we do. This includes participation in
recruitment-focused events and industry conferences such as the Grace Hopper conference, where I engage with attendees on careers in software engineering and opportunities within Bloomberg.
Community leadership and representation
I currently serve as Co-Lead of Bloomberg’s Black in Tech community, an internal network focused on supporting Black talent, bringing new talent into the organisation, and increasing representation at all levels. Through this work, I help create space for mentorship, connection, and professional development, while contributing to a broader culture of inclusion within engineering and technology roles.
This community leadership complements my technical work and reflects my belief that sustainable change in the tech sector requires both strong systems and intentional support for the people building them.
Below are selected Bloomberg press releases referencing projects and platform enhancements delivered under my leadership during my time as Team Lead, included for additional context.
